We are enabling eyeglasses to be prescribed at the push of a button. Worldwide, more than 1 billion people suffer from poor vision because they lack the corrective eyeglasses they need. The majority of these people are from low-resource settings, particularly those in developing countries. While eyeglasses can be sold profitably for cheap (<$5!), obtaining an accurate prescription for those eyeglasses be a major challenge due to the global shortage of eye care professionals. PlenOptika will increase access to eyeglasses with the QuickSee—an inexpensive, handheld device that quickly and easily prescribes corrective eyeglasses. Our clinically-validated technology breaks the tradeoff between price and training requirements that prohibits other devices and approaches from improving the prescription process in low-resource settings.
